What generators document about marking their output

Article 50(2) puts the marking duty on providers. Sixteen generators publish enough to be read against it. Seven of the sixteen entries describe a mark inside the file or the signal, and nine describe only something a viewer can see or a flag that puts it there. As of 2026-09-22.

1Why a record of instruments carries a vendor table

Article 50(2) is addressed to providers, and paragraph 4 to deployers. Anyone publishing a series generated on someone else's model sits on the deployer side of that line, which means the marking half of the duty is discharged, or not, by the tool. Whether it is discharged is not a question about the regulation; it is a question about what each vendor writes on its own pages. This page records those statements next to the clause they bear on, so the two can be read together instead of separately.

What follows is not an assessment of compliance. A vendor sentence about a visible watermark is evidence about a visible watermark, and the machine-readable marking that paragraph 2 asks for is a different thing again. Where a vendor documents one and not the other, the row says only what the page says.

Inclusion rule. Tools whose own public pages state, in English, whether output carries a mark and what removes it. Tools that publish no such statement are not given a row, and no row is inferred from a product's behaviour. Order. Alphabetical by tool name, so the order carries no judgement.

2Visible marks and machine-readable marking are not the same duty

Paragraph 2 asks for output that is marked in a machine-readable format and detectable as generated. A visible watermark is neither of those things on its own: it is legible to a person, not to a parser, and it is removed by a crop. Seven rows in the table speak to paragraph 2 in its own terms, and they split into two kinds: a signal mixed into the picture or the audio, and a signed manifest riding in the container beside it.

The plan-tier pattern in the remaining rows speaks to something else: a visible mark that a paying customer can switch off is a product decision, and the duty in paragraph 2 does not move with the price of a plan. Two rows move it somewhere else again, onto a request parameter that defaults to off, which hands the decision to whoever writes the integration rather than to whoever buys the subscription.
