Robust, and the list that gives the word meaning

A mark described as robust has been designed against something. Which operations were in scope decides what the word means, and a claim with no list attached cannot be checked or compared. As of 2026-09-12.

Inclusion rule. Components of a robustness claim as vendor documentation and research publications make them. Order. From the most informative component to the least.

1Routine handling is the useful list

Cropping for a surface, a filter in an app, a frame-rate change, a compression pass on upload. Every one of those happens to every published file, which makes survival against them the property that decides real outcomes.

An adversarial list is a different subject. Somebody trying to remove a mark has more options and more patience than a delivery pipeline, and claims about routine handling say nothing about them.

2Design intent and measurement are different statements

Designed to withstand something is a statement about what a team aimed at. A rate of detection after that operation is a measurement. The first is common in documentation and the second is nearly absent.

A register should record which kind it found. Treating intent as a figure is the sort of quiet upgrade that makes a whole record less trustworthy than the pages it was built from.

3Robustness only applies to marks inside the content

A record in a container is not robust or fragile in this sense: it is copied or it is not. Applying the word to a manifest confuses a binary event with a degradation curve.

Which is worth noticing because the two mechanisms are often discussed in one breath. The container question is about tools choosing to copy something; the content question is about signal strength.

4What a reader should do with an unqualified claim

Treat it as a pointer to a question rather than as an answer. Robust against what, measured how, and published where. If none of those is available, the claim is atmospheric.

The practical alternative is a route test: send an asset through the real pipeline and check the copy an audience receives. That answers the question for the pipeline in use rather than in general.
