Wan and Firefly on who inherits the job of marking

The contrast is not about mechanism. It is about whether a later decision by the vendor can still reach the output, and for one of these two it cannot reach anything already downloaded. As of 2026-09-22.

1A hosted product is a place an obligation can land

One interface, one default, one decision that moves everybody's output at once. Whatever a provider duty asks for, a hosted product is somewhere it can be implemented and verified.

Published weights are not that. They run on other hardware under other code, and no announcement, parameter or policy from the original team reaches them. The marking question travels with the weights.

2Permissive terms are silent on purpose

The repository was read for any requirement on a downstream operator to mark what comes out, and none was found. That is not the same kind of silence as a pricing page skipping a subject.

Broad permission is the point of publishing weights that way. The register records the silence and keeps it in a separate category from the ordinary sort, because they mean different things.

3Neither entry is described as doing the other's job

The hosted entry writes credentials and says nothing about a visible notice. The open-weights entry documents an optional corner mark on its hosted route and nothing at all for the other route.

Read together, they map the two ends of the provider question: a party that can act and a party that may not exist in any identifiable form once the weights are loose.
