The fourth row: the one each entry names for itself

Every generator entry carries three fixed rows and one open one. The open row is filled with whatever that vendor's page happened to address, and reading the column end to end shows what the industry talks about when nobody asks a question. As of 2026-09-12.

1Why one row was left open on purpose

A register that fixes every row in advance gets tidy tables and loses whatever the sources volunteered. Three rows here were fixed before any page was read, because the article asks three questions and a reader needs them answered the same way everywhere. The fourth was left for whatever else the vendor page put on the table.

The result is that no two entries name it the same thing. One vendor talks about how many organisations can read its manifest. Another talks about what an editor cannot undo. A third explains, on a pricing page, why a customer might want the mark gone. Those are not comparable answers, and forcing them into one column name would have quietly discarded the only sentence some vendors wrote about marking at all.

2Reading the column tells you what the industry volunteers

Group the cells and a pattern shows up that no fixed schema would have surfaced. Entries read from a plan table almost always volunteer a reason a paying customer would want the mark off. Entries read from technical documentation volunteer a property instead: how far a detector reaches, how small a segment it can localise, what an edit does not destroy.

That split follows the audience of the page rather than the seriousness of the vendor. A pricing page is written for somebody deciding what to buy; a system card or a research publication is written for somebody deciding whether to trust a measurement. Neither was written for a reader holding a transparency clause, and this column is the clearest place to see that.

3What the open row cannot be used for

The cells are not scores and cannot be ranked. A vendor naming its detection granularity has not thereby done better than one naming the price at which a mark disappears; it has published a different kind of sentence, on a different kind of page, for a different reader.

Nor does an entry's choice of row say anything about what the product does in the columns it left alone. The fixed rows record that separately, and where a vendor page addresses none of them the fixed cell says so. The open row adds; it never stands in for a missing answer.
